Additional Programs and Services

Additional services are often available, though they may not be offered in all regions. Call your regional Area Agency on Aging to see if the following, or other, services are provided.

Home Modification

Minor home repair, remodeling or modifications, such as wheel chair ramps, bathroom grab bars, railings for outside steps, replacing door handles, or adding a bathroom to the ground floor of your home, intended to make the home environment safer and more accessible so that you can remain in your home longer.  Financial assistance may be available from the US Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) through their FHA 203K Rehabilitation Mortgage Loan program.  

The US Department of Agriculture also has housing assistance programs available in rural areas for home ownership, home repair and modification, and rental assistance in multi-unit housing complexes.

Telephone Reassurance

Volunteers regularly call to check on the well-being of seniors participating in the program.

Shopping Assistance

Volunteers accompany and assist frail or disabled older individuals to purchase food, clothing or other necessary items, or, volunteers shop for a home bound senior.

Health Promotion

Provides regular exercise opportunities for seniors, as well as health screenings (example: blood pressure checks), at senior centers or other locations convenient for elderly persons to attend.

Friendly Visiting

Volunteers regularly visit homebound elderly to read to them or just to talk.
